Smudging with burning sage is a popular method for cleansing a room of heavy energy. Different types of sage are available. Science is now supporting this idea. Native American teachers advised me about the history of sage and its benefits. They recommended using a large abalone shell under the burning sage. I personally have used a small iron frying pan when I did not have my shell available.
Also, the Native American teachers recommended using sweet grass to bring in the lighter positive energies. They cautioned to look at how the sweet grass was harvested. Sweet grass is best cut rather than the roots pulled from the earth. When cut, the plant can still continue to grow. It is also a way to honor the plants.
Pacific Northwest elders taught me that they preferred Cedar. The dried cedar needles cleared the heavy energy and also provided the lighter positive energy. Cedar is abundant in the Northwest, especially after a wind storm.
